Five Cherokee County cross country teams qualified for the GHSA State Cross Country Championships this past weekend at their region and area competitions.
On the girls side, Creekview, Etowah and River Ridge each qualified in their respective classifications. Running at Allatoona Creek Park in Acworth, Creekview’s Makena Gates finished as the Region 6AAAAAA individual champion with a time of 18:38. Gates will look to win her third consecutive individual state championship at the Class AAAAAA state championships on November 1 at Carrollton Elementary.
Running at Boling Park in Canton on Saturday morning, Etowah’s girls finished No. 6 at the Area 3 Championships to qualify for state. The Etowah girls were the only Class AAAAAAA team from Cherokee, boys or girls, to qualify for the state championships. Makenna Calbert led the way for Etowah, finishing fifth on Saturday with a time of 18:58 while teammate Sydney Runyan finished seventh with a time of 19:09. Cherokee’s Lexi Pavese finished with a time of 19:27 and qualified for the state championships as an individual with her 12th place finish. The Class AAAAAAA girls state championships will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 2 in Carrollton.
Creekview’s girls and River Ridge’s girls finished third and fourth, respectively, on Saturday in Acworth. River Ridge’s Cayden Crimson (20:00) finished sixth as an individual and was the Lady Knight’s top runner while Creekview’s Elizabeth McTyre (20:11) finished eighth. The Class AAAAAA girls championships will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, November 1 in Carrollton.
Creekview’s boys and River Ridge’s boys were the only boys teams from Cherokee County to qualify for the state championships. Creekview finished third while River Ridge finished fourth, respectively, on Saturday in Acworth. Creekview’s Bryson Gates (17:10) finished 10th while teammate Chris Adams (17:15) finished 11th. River Ridge’s David Crow (17:18) finished 12th and teammate Rylan Haskett (17:20) finished 13th.
Cherokee’s Dominick Delillo was the lone male from Cherokee County to qualify as an individual for the Class AAAAAAA championships. Delillo finished 11th at the Area 3 championships with a time of 16:12.
The Class AAAAAA boys state championships will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 1 in Carrollton while the Class AAAAAAA boys state championships will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 2. All state championship meets will be held at Carrollton Elementary School.
