The Atlanta Braves are expected to announce next week that the 2021 Major League All-Star Game will be held at SunTrust Park.
“We continue to feel really good about it, and we expect there will be an announcement at some point in time soon,” Braves president and CEO Derek Schiller told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday.
The Braves are planning an “All-Star Celebration” in the Battery before Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals. Many of their former All-Star players, including Hank Aaron, Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Phil Niekro are expected to attend the ceremony.
Atlanta initially bid to host the Mid-Summer Classic during the 2020 season, but that game was awarded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. At the time, the Braves told Major League Baseball that they would also be interested in 2021. This year’s All-Star game will be played at the Progressive Field in Cleveland on July 9.
This would be the third time the All-Star Game would be played in Atlanta. The game first came to the city in 1972 at Atlanta Stadium, before it became Atalnta-Fulton County Stadium. The second game was played at Turner Field in 2000.
By the time the 2021 All-Star Game arrives, however, SunTrust Park may be going by another name. Its namesake financial institution is merging with BB&T.
