I would like to encourage people to ignore the narrative of pervasive racism that is being proclaimed by influential persons in various roles in government, politics, education, the military, churches, and corporations. Let me tell you what happened a few weeks ago.
A friend and I noticed an older gentleman (Lloyd) broken down on the side of Highway 5 in Marietta. It was noon on a hot Saturday. We stopped to see if we could help. Lloyd had run into the curb and had a flat tire, but no jack. I had a floor jack. Within 10 minutes a Black guy (Nick) stopped and announced that he was an expert at changing tires, however the car was sitting too low to use my jack. Nick left to go purchase a trolley jack. While he was gone, another Black man offered to help, but had no jack, although he did have a trunk full of tools which he uses to help people who are stranded. In 10 minutes, a white guy stopped to help and left to go back to his house and bring a jack we could use. Nick returned with the jack for which he paid $98. After changing the front tire, we noticed that the back tire had a bubble in the sidewall. Nick gave Lloyd the jack he had just bought and suggested that I follow Lloyd to the tire store and buy him two tires, which I did. Lloyd said that he didn’t know what he would have done had we not shown up.
The point is that we were all just people helping people and it didn’t matter what race we were. As the U.S. Declaration of Independence says “…all men are created equal…” I think that the rhetoric within Critical Race Theory is promoting racism as it encourages whites and Blacks to think of each other as enemies. I’m not naïve enough to think there is no racism on either side, but my experiences have taught me that there is more mutual respect than disdain between Blacks and whites. I am reminded of the song we sang in Sunday School when I was a child: “Jesus loves the little children; all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white; they are precious in His sight…” God loves us all alike. May we love each other as He loves us!
