In 2010, I wrote the following words in the Cherokee Tribune: “It doesn’t seem to matter where I am or what the occasion maybe, the people are concerned about the direction the current administration is taking our country – the United States of America. They shake their heads and deplore: “I just don’t understand what is happening!” … It’s as if a new crisis is happening daily to take the people’s minds off the crises that happened yesterday… and when I get depressed (easy to do with the activities going on in Washington D.C. today) I turn to the scriptures and search them to find understanding.
The scriptures are a treasure trove of ancient governments dealing with crises like what America is facing today. It was the corruption and lack of personal integrity of elected officials in ancient Israel that led to the capture, destruction, and scattering of the ten tribes and the eventual destruction of Judah and Jerusalem. These words, from Moses, provide an insight into what is happening today in America: “For, from the days of Cain, there was a secret combination, and their works were in the dark …” Another passage, referencing secret combinations, is more explicit. It reads: “And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain … behold they shall be destroyed …”
Things haven’t changed much since 2010 except the people seem to be more exasperated than ever, and locally are we seeing Washington’s culture beginning to trickle down into local politics. But the crisis’ keep coming, one after the another – the latest being, or was last week when I wrote this column, the crisis on America’s southern border with the crossing of thousands of illegal persons and the crises this week being the destructive activities of the BLM and Antifa movements. And this administration continues to blame Donald Trump for the crisis’ that have come about in the first six months of the Biden administration. The main street media, fully protected by our Constitution’s first amendment, have become one of America’s Benedict Arnolds, and totally supported by the left-wing radicals, are having a field day as they keep blaming Biden’s mistakes on Trump.
And then remembering the continuing border crises that Isaiah 49:22-23 is a reminder of, that God is still involved. His words read: “Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders. And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.”
Even after reading Isaiah’s words, I keep asking is “this border crisis prophecy being fulfilled?” Those children from Central America are literally being carried into America on the shoulders of America’s “kings and queens.” These scriptures also reminded me of how modern Israel was created in 1948, on the shoulders of kings and queens.
Recently, while pondering the growing worldwide tensions, especially in the Middle East where tensions are still high, and with Iran on the verge of having the atomic bomb, I remembered how the United States was created, with God’s help, similar to how ancient Israel was created with the strong arm of God, after entering into a covenant with Jehovah. And because of that covenant they entered into with God they, the Israelites, became subject to the blessings and curses associated with covenant nations, blessings and curses that Moses recorded in Deuteronomy chapter 28.
Local Bible students are aware of the blessings Israel received when they were obedient to that covenant and of the curses they incurred when that covenant was broken — and God’s wrath came upon them with a vengeance. The ten tribes were taken captive by the Syrians and eventually scattered. And later when Judah became corrupted, they were attacked, and their people taken captive along with Jerusalem and its temple eventually destroyed.
A question then came to mind: If Israel was created with the help of Jehovah and then entered a covenant with God, is the United States, itself a covenant nation, subject to those same blessings and curses that befell ancient Israel? America has also had its share of curses, including the Civil War along with its long aftermath.
Are more curses coming? A question all Americans would do well to ponder
