Clayton Reid

Mr. Clayton Reid Jr, age 92, of Canton, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 at his residence, after a long and blessed life filled with laughter, a desire and passion to do for others, legendary wit, a strong spirituality, and loyalty to his beliefs and to his friends. A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the Canton First Baptist Church with Pastor Cliff Pace and Bro. Danny Peterman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour. Clayton was born June 12, 1927 to the late Dr. Albert Clayton Reid, Sr. and Mrs. Eleanor Jones Reid in Wake Forest, North Carolina. His childhood was filled with music, church, and academia. He probably inherited his love of golf from his Mother. Clayton's life was built upon a foundation of love for his church, his wife, his family and his community. Clayton came to Canton, GA shortly after graduating from Wake Forest College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. At first he lived with his grandmother, the late Mrs. R.T. Jones and would quickly become a part of the fabric of the little town of Canton. He worked his way up through the ranks of the Jones Mercantile Company, eventually serving and retiring as the Company President. Clayton served the Canton First Baptist Church as a "Lifetime Deacon", was a member of the Men's Quartet, the Adult Choir (where he and Anne met), and voluntary Secretary of all Sunday School Classes for numerous years. He selflessly volunteered his time with numerous civic organizations, including the Rotary Club. Clayton served as a Volunteer Fireman and was also a member and past chairman of the Housing Authority. At the time of his passing, Clayton remained on the Board of the Canton Textile Mill. An avid golfer, Clayton was a longtime member of the Canton Country Club, he even achieved an always elusive "hole in one". Above all, Clayton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne Reid; children, Mary Anne Reid, Albert Clayton Reid, III, Lane Reid, Montgomery Reid (Shelley); grandchildren, Christina Reid, Douglas Clayton Reid, Anna Rose Reid, and his sister, Mrs. Eleanor Forrow of Greenwich, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made as gifts to "Retire the Debt" at Canton First Baptist, 1 Mission Point, Canton, GA 30114 or online at cantonfirstbaptist.org. Sosebee Funeral Home, Canton, GA is honored to serve the family. sosebeefuneralhome.com 770-479-2131
