James L. "Bud" McElroy, age 73, of Canton passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020 at the Retreat at Canton. Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Billy Edmondson officiating. A private interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. McElroy served in the U.S. Army. He was a Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient. James was a hard worker, he began working at the age of 6 years old. He retired from General Motors with over 40 years of service and enjoyed studying history and relic hunting. He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold McElroy; mother, Opal McElroy Quick; stepfather, Bill Quick; brother, Arnold W. "Junior" McElroy; and sister, Louise Bagley. James is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda McElroy; 3 children, Stephen McElroy (Lisa), Laura Jackson (Andy) and Scott McElroy (Patty); 8 grandchildren, James, Morgan, Halee, Samuel, Katelynn, Destiny (John), Lexie and Taylor; 6 great-grandchildren, Zaylen, Maxton, Shelby, Maleah, Madyson and Ian; 3 siblings, Melinda Croft (Junior), Glenda Sweat (Billy) and David McElroy; brother-in-law, Michael Fowler; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Wreaths Across America, c/o GNC Advisory Council, PO Box 1116, Canton, GA 30114 or www.ganationalcemetery.org. Due to COVID-19 facial coverings are required, no food is permitted and limited seating is available due to social distancing requirements.
