A new local steakhouse and a chicken franchise are closer to opening in Woodstock, with the approval of alcohol licenses from the Woodstock City Council on Monday.

PRIME 120, a steak and seafood restaurant at 120 Chambers St. in downtown Woodstock, is expected to open sometime next month, according to owner Jason Sheetz. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The restaurant will occupy the former site of Firestone Wood Fired Pizza and Grill, which closed in June.

Joella’s Hot Chicken, opening soon at 188 Molly Lane, was also approved for alcohol sales. The franchise, which features a Southern-inspired menu with varying heat levels for chicken, opened its first Georgia location in Cumberland on Friday.

The council also approved a license for Happy China at 300 Village Centre Drive, Suite 111.

Also at the meeting, the council:

♦ Approved updates to the city’s sign standards on third readings, which remove certain restrictions on materials but add a provision that signs cannot be more than 10 percent plastic or acrylic. Flat panel signs are banned, and size is limited for electronic drive-through signs;

♦ Updated city ordinances on massage therapy businesses, wireless facilities and antennas and structures in right of way areas to reflect changes in state law;

♦ Voted to remove Commercial Disposal from a list of city-approved vendors for failing to provide a complete application with supporting documentation;

♦ Issued with Mayor Donnie Henriques proclamations recognizing Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week and Oct. 9 as Fellowship of Christian Athletes Day for FCA’s 10th annual Fields of Faith.

The mayor and council will meet at a special called meeting 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Chambers at City Center, 8534 Main St. in Woodstock. The council’s Sept. 23 meeting canceled due to the school system’s fall break.
