The Waleska mayor and three city council members will start new terms in January with no election in November, because they were the only ones to qualify for their positions.

Waleska Mayor Mary Helen Lamb and Councilmembers Vickie Cline Boswell, Dennis “Hill” Cochran and Lee Lamb will start new four-year terms in January.

Boswell will return to her seat on Post 5, and Cochran and Lamb will return to posts 2 and 6, respectively. The incumbents were the only people to qualify for their respective positions by Wednesday when qualifying ended, city clerk and manager Robyn Smith said in an email to the Tribune.

Lamb, a longtime city councilwoman and former mayor pro tem, was appointed as mayor when previous mayor Doris Jones resigned in January, nearly a year before the end of her term. She is a former member of the Sequoyah Regional Library System Cherokee County Board.

Boswell is the newest member of the city council; she was sworn in in February after being appointed to fill the mayor’s former council seat. She has previously been involved with the city serving on its downtown development authority.

Cochran, a radiology worker at a hospital in Rome, has served on the council for more than seven years; he resigned from his post early last year due to family and job commitments. He returned to fill his current post at the end of the year.

Lee Lamb joined the council last March, filling a seat formerly occupied by Edna Cook. Lee, the mayor’s son, is a teacher at Freedom Middle School.
