A Canton woman is sharing her story of surviving a brutal attack by her ex-husband in a Discovery true crime show airing July 31.
In 2021, Rodney William Metzer was sentenced to 25 years in prison on 14 charges related to a New Year’s Eve attack on his ex-wife.
Metzer was convicted of breaking into his ex-wife’s home, smothering her with a pillow, threatening her with a handgun and leaving her bound outside in zip tie handcuffs, while wearing a mask and disguising his voice. After the attack, authorities say he staged a “rescue,” changing his clothes, returning to the home, and calling 911. After reviewing the evidence, investigators determined that he was actually the one who had kidnapped and assaulted her.
Metzer pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced in August 2021 to 70 years, with the first 25 years to be served in confinement and the remaining 45 years to be served on probation.
In the 60-minute “Evil Lives Here” episode titled, “He Pretended to Save Me,” his ex-wife, Morgan Metzer, shares more details about the assault.
The night of the attack, Morgan said in an interview on the show, she remembers being woken up by the sense that someone had been staring at her.
“I opened up my eyes and I saw this figure standing in my bedroom doorway,” she said. “I screamed so loud that my throat was in excruciating pain, I didn’t think it was possible to be able to scream like that.”
In another part of the episode, Morgan discusses how she used to cope with her then-husband’s violent behavior. She said she used to lock herself and her children in one of their closets to get away from him.
“I would keep reassuring them that he was just having a bad day and needs time to cool off and we’re just trying to stay out of the way. I would make it a game and we would do something in there together,” she said.
At Rodney Metzer’s apartment, officers found zip ties that matched the ones used in the assault and evidence of internet searches on how to kill someone. Morgan said police also found a suicide letter.
“He had planned on killing me and killing himself. I guess because he couldn’t have me, he didn’t want anybody else to have me,” Morgan said. “This was all premeditated, it wasn’t just a moment of insanity.”
The episode airs 10 p.m. Sunday, July 31 on Investigation Discovery and will be available to stream the same day on Discovery+.
