VILLA RICA, Ga. (AP) — The son of a police chief in Georgia has pleaded guilty to second degree murder and first-degree child cruelty in the death of his 3-year-old stepson.

News outlets report Joshua David Richards was sentenced to 25 years in prison and 25 years on probation Wednesday for the 2018 death of Brentley Gore.

Court records say Gore died from blunt force trauma after suffering from multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding, a stroke and seizures. It says Richards caused those injuries while he was bathing Gore, who vomited in bed.

District Attorney Herb Cranford says Richards initially faced nine charges, including two counts of murder, but those were dropped as part of a plea deal.

Richards is the son of Carrollton Police Chief Joel Richards.
