A man was arrested early Sunday after Woodstock police say he choked and struck his pregnant ex-girlfriend, who was sent to a hospital for her injuries.
Joseph Newton, 31, is charged with strangling the woman in the early hours Sunday morning at his Woodstock apartment, according to his arrest warrant. She had recently ended the relationship and is pregnant with Newton’s child, police said in the warrant.
The warrant goes on to say Newton struck the woman’s face and upper torso with “both his fists and feet,” and officers found symptoms of strangulation in the woman, and swollen injuries on her arms and hands. She told authorities Newton “stomped” on her abdomen so as to kill the unborn child, and held her down multiple times to prevent her escaping, per the warrant. She was sent to a nearby hospital for injuries to her neck and spine.
As of Monday morning, “both mom and baby were doing okay,” Woodstock Police spokesperson Brittany Page said.
Newton is charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, aggravated battery, battery and false imprisonment. He was booked Sunday morning into the Cherokee County jail, where he remained Monday without bond.
