A construction crane towers over the Northside Hospital Cherokee Women’s Center as work progresses to add two floors.

Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System will begin operating as one entity Aug. 28, though full integration of the two companies will take place over two years, officials said Wednesday.

Northside operates Northside Hospital Cherokee in Canton, as well as other medical office and testing facilities in Holly Springs and Woodstock. The company is one of the largest employers in the county with more than 2,000 workers.

The merger agreement was initially approved by the Georgia Attorney General in November 2017. In February, the Federal Trade Commission completed its review of the combination and gave its approval to move forward.

The most notable change will be in Gwinnett County, as the former GHS facilities take on the Northside name.

Beginning on Aug. 28:

♦ The Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville at 1000 Medical Center Blvd., will be called Northside Hospital Gwinnett;

♦ The Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth, located at 3620 Howell Ferry Road, will be called Northside Hospital Duluth;

♦ The Gwinnett Extended Care Center at GMC-Lawrenceville at 650 Professional Drive, will be called the Northside Gwinnett Extended Care Center; and,

♦ The Glancy Rehabilitation Center, located at 3215 McClure Bridge Road in Duluth, will be called Northside Gwinnett Joan Glancy.

Some managerial changes will go into effect with the official launch of the merged entities as well.

Debbie Mitcham, longtime chief financial officer and 25-year veteran of Northside Hospital, will be the new president and CEO of Northside’s Gwinnett health care campuses. Phil Wolfe, who served as president and CEO of the Gwinnett system for the past 13 years, is retiring effective Aug. 28.

Gwinnett Health System had no operations in Cherokee County.
