A 52-year-old man died Monday as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash near Woodstock.

According to Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Jay Baker, “Cherokee Sheriff’s deputies responded to an accident (Monday) morning just before 7 a.m. on East Cherokee Drive near South Sequoyah Drive near Woodstock. A Kia Soul traveling west on East Cherokee Drive traveled off the roadway. It appears the driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle back onto the roadway and across all lanes of travel, striking a tree on the south side of East Cherokee Drive. After striking the tree, the vehicle ended up in the eastbound lane and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.”

The 52-year-old driver of the Kia Soul, later identified as Robert McCollum of Canton, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured in the incident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit.
