CANTON — A Marvel Studios production featuring Marvel mainstay Jeremy Renner and Marvel newcomer Hailee Steinfeld is taking place in downtown Canton, using the historic Jones Building as a backdrop for some of the television series’ scenes.

The television series “Hawkeye,” began shooting Feb. 22 according to a city of Canton newsletter. Scenes are being filmed in the Jones Building.

“Before filming began, the production crew was working on building and setting up the scenes,” City Manager Billy Peppers said. “Majority of the filming will take place this week, with remaining filming days taking place at the beginning of March.”

Filming for the upcoming television series started on Feb. 22, and will continue through Feb. 26. Filming will then pick up again on March 4 and March 5. The Canton newsletter said that, to accommodate the filming on those days, road closures will take place on those dates. The closures include East Main Street from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., with a detour on West Marietta, and the south-side lane on North Street will be closed from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will also be limited parking in the Cannon Park parking lot and the lower city hall parking lot.

Canton Mayor Bill Grant said that the city is excited to have yet another major studio filming a feature series downtown, and that it is even more exhilarating that a historic landmark is being used as a backdrop.

“Even more exciting than the filming is Marvel’s multi-month lease and improvements to the historic Jones Building, which is a downtown landmark,” Grant said. “We are currently working with a real estate advisor to prepare a request for qualifications and proposals to redevelop the building for an exciting new use as part of the ‘Enhancing the Potential of Historic Downtown Canton’ tenet in our Roadmap for Success. It’s a very exciting time downtown.”

Movie Scoop reported that the television series will see Renner reprise his role as Clint Barton, first seen in 2011’s “Thor,” and most recently seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Steinfeld, will play the role of Kate Bishop. The series will focus on Barton training Bishop to take over the role of “Hawkeye.” The television series created by Jonathan Igla is expected to come out late this year and will be available to stream on Disney+.
