A Canton resident was killed in a one-vehicle incident at the QuikTrip convenience on Riverstone Parkway in Canton on Aug. 3.
Sean Joseph Greenberg, 45 of Canton, was killed when his vehicle, a 2016 Mercedes, struck one of the columns supporting the canopy over the gas pumps shortly after 5 p.m.
According to SFC Tim Nichols, the commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 28 in Jasper, the investigation found that Greenberg had been traveling north on Old Ball Ground Highway leading into the QuikTrip. After running through the intersection just south of QuikTrip leading out onto Riverstone Parkway, Nichols said Greenberg struck a curb and continued through the area in front of the gas pumps before striking one of the columns supporting the station’s canopy.
“He was unrestrained, and was pronounced dead on the scene,” Nichols said.
Greenberg’s body was taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy and toxicology study.
The incident remains under investigation, but Nichols said the cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma. A supplemental report will be prepared once the autopsy and toxicology reports have been received from the state crime lab, he added.
Officers from the Canton Police Department were first on the scene, along with a unit from the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. However, once Georgia State Patrol units arrived on site, Nichols said control of the scene and the investigation was turned over to the state police.
