A Jasper man injured in a single-vehicle crash late Sunday in Cherokee County died from his injuries on Tuesday, authorities said.

According to Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Capt. Jay Baker:

The crash occurred Sunday night at approximately 11 p.m. on Mineral Springs Road near Ball Ground. Investigators believe the Dodge pickup being driven by James Byrd, 20, of Jasper left the road, traveled up an embankment and went airborne, hitting several trees before coming back down in a ditch and winding up back in the road.

Byrd was thrown from the vehicle. He was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta where he died from his injuries Tuesday morning. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident. Preliminary indications are that speed played a role in the accident.
