A structure fire damaged most of a home near Waleska late Thursday afternoon, fire department spokesman Tim Cavender reported Friday.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched by Cherokee 911 shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday at 724 Mitchell Road, located off Ga. Highway 108 in Waleska.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a one-story home that was 75 percent on fire. The homeowners and their five children (ages 3-17), were able to escape without injury. The couple’s 7-year-old daughter discovered the fire and notified her parents, who were outside at the time.

According to Cherokee County Fire Investigator Cheri Collett, it appeared that the fire started in the laundry room. The fire caused significant damage to the structure and to all the contents as well. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the family and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The Pickens County Fire Department also responded to assist with the call.
