A Creekview High School graduating senior has won a college scholarship to help pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.

The Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, which is made up of active and retired female educators in Cherokee County, has selected Bailey Newell as its 2020 scholarship recipient. The chapter presents one scholarship a year to an outstanding female CCSD graduating senior who plans to earn an education degree.

“This is National Teacher Appreciation Week, so it’s an especially fitting time to recognize a future educator like Bailey,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Congratulations to Bailey on earning this scholarship and thank you for choosing this important career path! Thank you to our Gamma Eta Chapter and President Dr. Shannon Carroll for all you do for our teachers and students.”

Bailey, who will attend the University of Georgia in the fall to major in education, will receive $1,500 from the chapter, which is dedicated to “promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.”

An active member of the Grizzlies Color Guard for four years and varsity winter guard for two years, Bailey is a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Society, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society and Creekview Math Team. Since seventh grade, she has been a member of Friends Club, which provides students the opportunity to serve as peer helpers and foster friendships with special needs students.
