A Cherokee County grand jury has formally charged a Conyers man with an attempted armed robbery in February near a preschool in the Towne Lake community.

Jakier Mahliik Mitchell, 23, of Conyers, is charged with aggravated assault, attempt to commit a felony, and two counts of possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, according to an indictment filed June 13.

According to the arrest warrant filed by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, between 9:33 p.m. and 10:36 p.m. Jan. 13 in the parking lot of Towne Lake Academy in Woodstock, Mitchell held the passenger of his car at gunpoint, demanding the woman hand over cash and her purse.

Mitchell had met the woman online and met in person for the first time that day, according to the sheriff’s office.

As of Monday, Mitchell was in custody without bond, Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Capt. Jay Baker said.

Mitchell has a court hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. July 13, according to court documents.

An indictment is a formal charge of felony offenses, and defendants are assumed innocent until proven guilty.
