A new uniform patrol precinct will open to serve the Ball Ground area Tuesday, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office announced.

The Ball Ground Precinct, located at 1190 Evenflo Drive near Ball Ground, joins five sheriff’s office precincts around Cherokee County, which serve Free Home, Waleska, Bridgemill- Sixes, Oak Grove and Hickory Flat.

Two precincts, the Free Home and Waleska locations, cover two-thirds of the county, according to the sheriff’s office. The new Ball Ground Precinct will serve the northeastern portion of Cherokee County to include the city limits of Ball Ground and Nelson, providing citizens higher patrol visibility and quicker response times. The city of Nelson does not have a police force and the Ball Ground Police Department does not patrol 24 hours a day.

The Ball Ground Precinct will be located at the existing facility for the county’s Fire Station 21 off Ball Ground Highway.

Sheriff Frank Reynolds has appointed Lt. Darin Downey to be the Ball Ground Precinct commander. Downey is a 19-year veteran with the C.S.O. and has experience in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, Uniform Patrol, K-9, recruiting, media relations and fleet management.
