The state has begun issuing a newly designed driver license out of the Canton office of the Department of Driver Services that the agency bills as more secure.
Department spokeswoman Susan Sports said more and more DDS offices will begin to offer the new design for licenses and state IDs until the new design is available statewide. Until then, all existing licenses and IDs remain valid until their expiration date, she said. The Canton DDS office is located at 200 Brown Industrial Parkway.
“This card incorporates the most recent best practices in secure credentialing in the nation,” Sports said. “The most visible is the photo is now black and white instead of full color which enhances facial features.”
The new cards are also a new material, polycarbonate, which Sports said is harder to peel away in layers, and there are raised laser engraved signatures over the photo.
“There are many covert security features which can only be viewed with a special type of UV light,” Sports said.
The new design retains a feature introduced in 2010, the last time the state launched a new card production system — licenses and IDs for people 21 and older have a horizontal orientation, while those for younger drivers are vertically oriented.
