The Cherokee County Homeless Veteran Program is partnering with the Cohutta Chapter of Trout Unlimited to offer free fly fishing classes for disabled and elderly veterans of Cherokee and Pickens counties.

The program will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 3, 10, 17, 24 at Canton Boys and Girls Club, 1082 Univeter Rd. in Canton. A go fishing day will be determined at a later date.

The free program will include use of fly fishing equipment and is intended to be focused on disabled veterans as well as elderly veterans of all skill levels. There are only 20 slots available for this program at this time. The fly fishing program is designed to focus on getting disabled veterans out of the house into adaptive sports so that they can again be part of the community.

“The four week program will be led by chapter instructors and provide the following classroom instructions: Intro to fly fishing; equipment used; lines leaders and knots; clean water conservation and insect life; places to fish; fly tying; and fly casting," said Sid Wilson, Trout Unlimited Cohutta Chapter president. "The program will also culminate in a go fishing day on a local river."

Jim Lindenmayer, director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veteran program, said the veterans administration has placed "a lot" of focus on developing and conducting adaptive sports programs for veterans at a number of VA Medical Centers around the country.

"With Cherokee County being remote from these medical centers, there is a great need for communities to develop such programs at a local level," he said. “We are pleased to create this program in partnership with the Veterans of Cherokee County and CCHVP," Wilson said. “Fishing is a sport for life and can be enjoyed at all ages and skill levels.”

Disabled or elderly veterans interested in taking part in the program should contact Lindenmayer at 678-983-7590 or at for a program registration form.
