Safe Kids Cherokee and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services will be holding a car seat event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Kroger in Hickory Flat, located at 6676 Hickory Flat Highway.

Parents can have car seats inspected at the event. Safe Kids Cherokee will have car seats and boosters also available for those who need a seat for a small donation. Walk-ins are also welcomed to the event.

With more than 2,600 children under 13 involved in a car crash every day, or one child every 33 seconds, parents need to be extra vigilant about keeping kids safe in cars, event organizers said. And while most families put kids in car seats, the latest research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 59% of car seats are not installed correctly.

According to state law, children under 8 must ride in an approved child restraint system.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is the lead agency for Safe Kids Cherokee.
