A late-night crash on Interstate 75 near Priest Road on Saturday resulted in the death of a 19-year-old Cartersville woman, authorities said.
According to Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Capt. Jay Baker:
At about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday a pickup driven by Benjamin James Land, 19 of Acworth struck a guardrail, left the road and then struck a tree. A female passenger, Savanna Joyce Martin, 19 of Cartersville, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Land suffered minor injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. There was another passenger in the vehicle who was not injured.
“Preliminary indications are that the driver of the truck was impaired,” Baker said. “The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident. No charges have been filed at this time.”
The incident was the second fatal crash last week. On Wednesday, 61-year-old Susan Kay Chambers of Cumming was killed when a tractor trailer ran into the back of her Ford Ranger pickup as she was stopped to make a left turn from the eastbound lane of Ga. Highway 20 near the Forsyth County line. The impact pushed Chambers’ vehicle into the path of another tractor trailer traveling westbound and was struck again.
That crash also remains under investigation and no charges have yet been filed in the incident.
