The Georgia Downtown Association has recognized Canton with an Award of Excellence as the Outstanding Promotional Campaign.
At the association's 2021 Georgia Downtown Conference, Canton won the award for its Downtown Canton Cash Mob promotion.
The promotion began Jan. 4 with the intent to organically grow a group of citizens to support small businesses in Downtown Canton through focused group spending.
This project has resulted in over 2,400 people joining the private group page on Facebook.
The goal was a Publishers Clearing House feeling with balloons and surprise a new business every two weeks, according to the city. Canton posts a live reveal on the Downtown Canton Facebook page, which is then shared to the Downtown Canton Cash Mob page. The participants of the Cash Mob agree to spend $20 at each Cash Mob business. Due to the pandemic, a new business was revealed every other week to help minimize crowding in shops and restaurants. The businesses are divided into three categories, retail, food/restaurant/brewery, and services. No two-like businesses are drawn back-to-back.
Participants may purchase merchandise, enjoy a service, or purchase gift cards that can be used later. Once a participant has cash mobbed eight businesses, they drop off their passport to enter a drawing for one of two prize bags. This is a marathon event, which will continue until all downtown businesses have been "mobbed."
