A candlelight vigil to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence will be held Oct. 18 in Canton.
The Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force and Cherokee Family Violence Center will hold the 2022 Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil Oct. 18, at the gazebo in Cannon Park.
A resource fair will be open before the vigil starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 18, with community organizations available.
The vigil ceremony is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Guest speakers and survivors will share their stories. The names of the 161 Georgians who lost their lives last year to domestic violence will be read, accompanied by musical guest violinist Juan R. Ramirez Hernandez, a longtime member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
According to the Cherokee Family Violence Center, the following numbers were reported in 2021:
♦ 3,702 — 911 domestic violence calls in Cherokee County
♦ 2, 388 — hotline calls to CFVC
♦ 123 — clients sheltered by CFVC
♦ 160 — temporary protective orders filed by CFVC
♦ 161 — domestic violence victims Killed in Georgia
♦ 3 — domestic violence victims killed in Cherokee County
This annual event takes place each October to correspond with Domestic Violence Awareness Month and serves as a time to remember victims who lost their lives to domestic violence, to honor those whose lives were shattered by domestic violence, and to celebrate survivors who light the way for others.
