CANTON — Cherokee County commissioners invited Bryce Leatherwood to Tuesday’s board of commissioners meeting to honor the Hickory Flat native for winning season 22 of “The Voice.”
Leatherwood received a proclamation from Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby to celebrate the country singer’s win, as well as his ties to Cherokee County. Leatherwood grew up attending Hickory Flat Elementary School, Dean Rusk Middle School and Sequoyah High School, and played on the wrestling team at Sequoyah. He has performed at local music venues including MadLife Stage and Studios.
After receiving the proclamation, Leatherwood thanked the commissioners “for this incredible honor.”
“My time on ‘The Voice’ I was trying to represent my family right, my hometown right, and the whole state of Georgia right,” he said. “Thank you so much to everyone who voted and watched the show. I know I will be moving on to Nashville, but Georgia will always be home.”
Leatherwood thanked those who helped him on this journey.
“To my hometown of Georgia and Cherokee County, it’s something I will never forget,” he said. “Getting recognized for an achievement like this is not so much on me, it’s on the people who supported me and helped me grow up. I’m just very honored to be represented by so many incredible people in Georgia.
The singer said that the journey has been “incredible” since winning season 22 of “The Voice” in December.
“I’ve had the opportunity to write with some incredible people in Nashville and I spent over two weeks up there,” Leatherwood said. “I’ve been in a lot of meetings with a lot of important people. Just shaping my music career one day at a time. I’ve been busting my butt writing and trying to get some music out there as soon as possible to the people of Georgia and everyone around the world. I’ve written probably about six original songs with other incredible writers.”
Leatherwood said that his music pulls sounds from “classic and pure country” to newer country acts such as Chris Stapelton and Morgan Wallen.
“I hope to make a new lane for myself and a new sound that people can enjoy,” he said.
