An armed woman who confronted staff at Mill Creek Middle School on Wednesday afternoon - forcing a lockdown and a search for the suspect who fled - is facing additional charges, authorities said.

The woman, Kimberly Bacon, was arrested at another location  after the incident Wednesday and booked into the Cherokee County jail and charged by school district police with criminal trespass, weapon on school grounds, violation of a protection order, battery and aggravated assault. On Thursday she was also charged with cruelty to children and making terroristic threats, according to court records.

She has a first court appearance scheduled for noon Friday at the Cherokee County jail before a magistrate judge.

According to a Cherokee Sheriff's Office report:

Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday Bacon arrived at the school and attempted to pick up a child who she had lost custody of. Witnesses said she was armed with a gun and argued with staff. Police were called and the woman left before they arrived.

Students were locked inside a locker room in the gymnasium for their safety and exited when deputies let them know it was safe. No one was injured.

According to school system spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby, a message was sent to parents that read: "On behalf of the Superintendent, please be advised that a Mill Creek MS parent was arrested today following an incident at after-school basketball practice. The parent, who remains in police custody, was trespassing and had a weapon on campus. We take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. If you have any questions, please contact your Principal."
