Cherokee County and other parts of north and central Georgia are under a wind chill watch starting late Thursday night through Saturday morning, the National Weather Service reported.
The NWS reports "dangerously cold" wind chills are possible as low as 10 below zero degrees Fahrenheit in most areas during the advisory, and lower wind chills are expected on higher terrain.
"Temperatures may not rise above freezing for 48-72 hours, with actual lows in the single digits and wind chill values at or below 0," Cherokee County EMA reported Tuesday afternoon. "Winds will also be gusty Thursday night through Saturday, with gusts of 30 mph possible. This could down a few trees and power lines. Now is a good time to make any needed preparations for the extended cold weather. Ensure that your home, vehicle, and outdoor pets are prepared. Additionally, check on family and friends who may need assistance during this period of extreme cold."
There is a chance that rain will change to snow late Thursday or early Friday, according to Cherokee EMA, with accumulations of one half inch or less possible.
