A 22-year-old Canton man was shot early Tuesday morning outside his home on Toonigh Road, according to the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.

Investigators are asking the public's help to identify the shooter and another man who accompanied him. The shooting occurred at about 2 a.m.

"(Victim David) Pierre stated he was outside his house when two unknown men in hoodies approached him, fired once and ran. Witnesses inside the home reported Pierre received a phone call just prior to the shooting," said Capt. Jay Baker of the sheriff's office. Investigators recovered one bullet casing at the scene.

The victim's family members took him to Northside Hospital Cherokee for treatment of the gunshot wound to his chest, Baker said. He was later transferred to WellStar Kennestone Medical Center in Marietta. The injury did not appear to be lift-threatening, Baker said.

Investigators are asking anyone who lives near Toonigh Road and Ranchwood Trail who saw anything or anyone suspicious to contact detectives at 770-928-0239, Baker said. The incident remains under investigation.
