The Cherokee County School District has reopened enrollment for in-person openings in PreK classes at two of its schools, officials said Wednesday.

"These spots usually only are available through an annual lottery drawing in March, so this is a rare opportunity for a seat in a tuition-free, accredited preschool program," school district spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said.

Students who are 4 years old at of Sept. 1 are eligible for the open seats at Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy in Canton and Oak Grove Elementary School Fine Arts Academy’s Preschool Center in southwest Cherokee.

These seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis; there are no income eligibility requirements, Jacoby said.

CCSD PreK classes follow the same hours as elementary school; parents drop off and pick up on the same car-rider schedule, and PreK students can ride the elementary school bus if an older sibling also rides.

PreK students can bring their own breakfast and lunch or order meals at no cost from the school cafeteria, as, due to a USDA-funded program, CCSD School Nutrition is not charging any fees for student meals through Dec. 31, 2020 (the program end date is dependent on available funding).

Students enjoy a full day of learning and fun in a class led by a certified teacher with a paraprofessional assistant. They prepare for kindergarten with lessons on shapes, colors, letter and numbers; art, music and science hands-on activities; and learn to use a computer and tablet. Learning through play is an important part of every day with indoor centers and outdoor playground time, as is developing routines and understanding how to make friends and cooperate with others.
