Harry and Leticia Hutchins ditched corporate America to follow their passion of growing, harvesting, roasting and selling the highest quality coffee that Honduras can offer and by the end of the month you can visit them in Holly Springs.
Currently an online shop selling medium and dark roast coffee along with what they call “coffee tea,” mugs and T-shirts, the formerly known Copan Coffee now to be called Alma Coffee, located at 3448 Holly Springs Parkway, is opening their roastery to the public.
Leticia is a fifth generation coffee farmer from Honduras and once she shared that passion with her husband Harry, they knew they needed to continue her family’s legacy.
“We take care of the coffee from planting to helping it grow, then we deal with all the sorting, exporting, the processing, the roasting and soon the brewing.That’s what makes us unique, there is no middle man, we control the entire process. No funny business, no gimmicks, just farm to cup coffee,” Leticia said.
The Hutchins’ have recently purchased a property in Holly Springs that has a warehouse in the back, which will be the roastery opening in mid-March, and a house in the front which will be transformed into a coffee shop, coming later this spring. They hope to be a place for the community to gather, appreciate coffee and participate in the events they hold at the space.
“We want to do movie nights, yoga, coffee tastings, painting events and turn a room into a rent-able office space for meetings,” Leticia said as she walked the space.
The passionate duo said they have a heart for helping people and especially helping the people closest to them, their fellow coffee farmers in Honduras.
Harry Hutchins said, “Coffee farmers right now just get so punished with price, for us we can get our coffee to market. For a lot of farmers who are fortunate enough to have above a fourth grade education, they are lucky to have a donkey or car and some of them can’t go to market. So they are never able to get the price that is fair and is what the roasters here are paying.”
For this reason they have created a program where they adopt coffee farmers. Through this process they commit to buying their production and whatever they can’t use at their roastery they connect the farmer with another roaster in the U.S. who shares the same values.
Leticia added, “They are people we know very well and we believe that with the money they receive they will continue to invest that into coffee, which is very important to us. Keeping this industry sustainable.”
