Faced with the dilemma of a beach trip during a pandemic, one Cherokee County family decided to use their vacation money to build a backyard getaway instead.
The Orcutt family, with the help of H&S Contracting, decided to spend their summer vacation designing and building a “she shed,” at their home east of Canton.
“We decided to spend the vacation money on the she shed since our original plan of going to the beach in Alabama fell through because beaches are a hot spot for COVID-19,” April Orcutt said.
The she shed sits behind the Orcutt’s house, nestled beside the horses and barn. The landscape of the backyard of the house adds to the peaceful nature of the she shed, which Orcutt said has and will be useful for a variety of reasons.
“We have two teenagers and I thought a she shed would be a cool place for them to hangout with friends since my elderly mother just moved into the basement and that kind of took away a place where they hang out,” Orcutt said. “On top of that, I have always wanted one because I thought they were cool and as I have found out with our she shed, they can be very relaxing and a great place to just hangout.”
Orcutt added that her daughter, Ciera, is an artist, so she spends time in the she shed working on her art and adding to her collection of cameras.
“I enjoy spending time in the she shed because it gives me peace and quiet away from everyday life and the needed space to do one of my hobbies, which is painting, as well as meditating,” Ciera Orcutt said.
The inside of the she shed was designed by April Orcutt, who designs and refinishes pieces of furniture that she resells.
Orcutt said she started collecting windows for the she shed about a month ago and H&S Contracting put the whole structure together in about a week. The overall project was finished about two weeks ago and Orcutt said that she is thrilled with the final results.
“I just like the challenge of putting something together and I thought it would be fun to see what I could find when designing and decorating the inside of the she shed,” Orcutt said. “I am very happy with the job that H&S Contracting did with the she shed and we are very much enjoying it.”
