A Cherokee County fire station between Woodstock and Holly Springs is closed temporarily for renovations, the county fire department announced on Monday.
Cherokee County Fire Station 24, at 1000 River Park Boulevard, closed on Jan. 4 and will not reopen until “sometime around March 4, depending on the weather,” said Tim Cavender, a department spokesman.
Contractor estimates indicate that the renovations should take approximately two months.
According to Cherokee County Field Operations Chief Shane West, contractors will install a new roof, new heating and cooling system, upgrade ceiling tiles and lights throughout the station, increase the size of the mechanical room and isolate the firefighter gear room “to accommodate ventilation separate from the inside station area.”
The isolation of the firefighter gear room is a response to recent evidence that toxic soot left on firefighters’ gear is contributing to illness and death in firefighters, Cavender said.
West assured in the written announcement of the closure that the station’s coverage area will still be covered efficiently. Station 24’s ambulance squad has relocated to Station 20, off Bells Ferry Road, and Fire Engine 24 has relocated to Station 8 in Holly Springs.
